Softball Fielding Practice Plan
Good fielding practice connects the moment before the ball arrives to the throw that follows. Rolling dozens of ground balls can help, but only when players also move into the right position, choose a target and finish the play under control.
Sample schedule
| Block | Time | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Movement preparation | 8 min | Practice ready position and first movement. |
| Throwing to a target | 10 min | Set up the finish of each defensive play. |
| Approach and glove work | 12 min | Move through predictable ground balls. |
| Lateral range station | 12 min | Add angle and body control. |
| Transfer and throw | 13 min | Connect the catch to an accurate target. |
| Situational defense | 15 min | Read runners, outs and likely plays. |
| Review | 5 min | Confirm the team communication words. |
This schedule is a starting point, not a command. Keep the total visible, then move minutes toward the skill your team needs today.
Why this sequence works
Place a visible target where the throw should finish. Players need to know whether the purpose is simply fielding cleanly, creating a quick transfer or completing an accurate play. Trying to grade all three at once can make feedback vague.
Fielding begins with the route to the ball, connects that route to a target and only then adds runners or outs. This makes the situational errors easier to diagnose.
How to adjust it
For beginners, use rolled balls and remove the throw until the approach is repeatable. For older players, add a pre-pitch responsibility and require the fielder to call the decision. In limited space, use shorter throws or a net target rather than forcing full-distance plays.
If fielders are arriving off balance, remove the throw and rebuild the approach. If the catch is clean but the decision is late, keep the ball predictable and rehearse the pre-pitch responsibility.
What to watch
A player can field a ball cleanly while stopping all momentum. Watch the approach, not only the glove. If the player arrives off balance, reduce speed or distance and rebuild the route to the ball.
Field conditions, player readiness and local rules always take priority. Stop or modify any activity when an athlete reports pain or cannot perform it comfortably.
